Pitbulls have a long history. Pitbull terriers are related to the Bulldog, a dog popular in Great Britain and used for bull baiting. After the British Parliament banned this bloody sport, the English Bulldog found itself replaced by cute lap dogs and those that did not display aggressive behaviors. However, breeders continued to use the breed in dog fighting and bred them for gameness and agility.

Breeders put stress on the fighting qualities of the dogs and appreciated courage and strength. They dreamed of producing an agile tenacious breed that would win all the fights and become an unsurpassed dog fighter. They crossed the Bulldog and some types of terriers to get a Pitbull Terrier. This breed was bred for aggression and was willing to fight to the death.

Even now, these dogs have retained their strong grip as they are notorious for their gameness and eagerness to fulfill the task to whatever the cost. Once gripping something, the Pitbull terrier will not easily let the target slip.

These dogs appeared in the United States in the 1800s and  used for guarding farms and as personal protection dogs. Samuel Clemons described a puppy with similar characteristics in his book "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."

Pitbulls Facts - Recognition

As for recognition, the United Kennel Club was the first to recognize the breed as American Pitbull terriers in 1898. The American Kennel Club was not in a hurry to recognize the breed and was generally reluctant to recognize any fighting dog breeds. However, this all-breed registry admitted the breed under the name of the Staffordshire Terrier. Later, the name was changed into the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Nowadays, Pitbulls are guardians. They make good companions for people who have a lot of experience with fighting dogs, and know how to manage them best. Pitbulls are not for novice breeders and owners.
