Pitbulls are dogs that have raised much controversy. Some people admire these dogs and others insist on banning them from breeding. Like with all dog breeds, there are some advantages and disadvantages of owning a Pitbull. These factors need careful consideration prior to buying or adopting a dog.
Potential owners should be aware of the temperament and physical qualities of the Pitbull terrier, housing conditions, exercise needs, common health problems found in the breed, and other issues.
Pitbulls Facts - Physical Attributes
Pitbull terriers are very powerful dogs with a broad area between the cheeks, well-developed muscles, a well-defined neck, round eyes and a short coarse coat. Usually, the ears are cropped, yet it is not obligatory. The tails are left unaltered. All eye and coat colors are permissible in the breed.
Height: 18-22 inches
Weight: 22-110 pounds
Pitbulls Facts - Personality
Pitbulls were originally bred for dog fighting and have retained strong protective instincts. They are devoted companions that will protect the owner and his/her property whatever the
cost. They have aggressiveness to a certain extent and they need early training
to avoid excessive aggressiveness. It is not recommended to train these dogs for gameness. Overall, the breed is affectionate with the family and is OK with other pets.
Pitbulls Facts - Care Requirements
These are short-coated dogs that are easy to groom. They are OK with regular brushing and bathing when necessary. Excessive bathing will remove natural oils and make the coat dull.
Instead, brush regularly to remove dead hairs and dirt.
The Pitbull terrier is best with warm climates and can live in an apartment, if sufficient exercise occurs. This breed enjoys activity in the open air and it will be grateful for a few long walks a day.
As for the health disorders commonly found in the breed, Pitbulls may suffer from canine hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, and allergies. Generally, Pitbulls are healthy and do not require excessive care.
